Ancient Benin correctly known as Edo is popular for the exceptional quality of its artefacts – commonly referred to as the “Benin Bronze”. The sophistication of its brass and bronze casting technology and tradition is considered evidence that the city was a centre for technological innovation, which could mean that the society produced bodies of scientific knowledge as well. However, Benin bronzes are more talked about as artistic and religious objects than as technological products.
